Overview: The British Telecom standard consists primarily of two documents. The first document SIN 227 describes the technical aspects of the Caller Display Service (CDS). Included in this is the physical layer characteristics along with the alert signals and V.23 data signals specifications.

Also described in SIN 227 is the Calling Line Identification Presentation (CLIP) message structure. This entails the message format, message timing, requirements for CLIP parameters, message length, and examples of the message structure.

The second document SIN 242 outlines the requirements of the terminal equipment (TE). This includes the signaling requirements for both the physical and data link layer, operation of the terminal equipment in terms of its network interface, and a series of electrical and signaling tests.
