AI-240  -  CAS Detector Testing System

Click for full-screen view

Click for full-screen view

Automated and programmable test system for evaluating the CAS (CPE Alerting Signal) detector used with Type II (off-hook) Caller ID signaling. Conforms to the industry standard Telecordia (Bellcore) SR-TSV-002476 document for performing talk-down, talk-off, and signal recognition testing. The AI-240 combines many of the keys elements required in a single product. This includes an ITU P.56 ASL (Active Speech Level) meter, parametric voice band equalizer, CAS/SAS tone generator, and data logger.

Details

The AI-240 consists of an ISA PC plug-in card and the CAS2200 software package. The plug-in card, called a Telephone Signal Processing Card (TSPC), performs emulation of a single telephone line with DSP based signal generation and analysis capabilities. The CAS2200 program, operating under Windows 95/98/NT/2000, provides the high level user interface.

Unlike the AI-150, which is designed for general Caller ID testing, the AI-240 focuses solely on testing the CAS detector that is present in all Type II (off-hook) Caller ID capable devices. The performance of the CAS detector is both critical to the operation of Caller ID devices, and unfortunately not trivial to determine. An improperly functioning CAS detector can miss Type II Caller ID transmissions, or perhaps more importantly, interrupt conversions on a seemingly random basis. Telecordia (formerly Bellcore) has published a testing plan (SR-TSV-002476 ) for the evaluation of CAS tone detectors. The AI-240 combines the key elements required for the testing procedure in a single package. For certain test conditions, the AI-240 and the speech source material are the only equipment items required. These conditions are:

  1. Testing Caller ID devices where the CAS tone is sensed directly from the tip and ring leads (required for TIA MEI compliance).
  2. Testing CAS detector circuits and IC’s where single ended signals are utilized instead of a tip and ring interface.

When testing Caller ID telephones that sense the CAS tone from the receive signal port of the hybrid, additional equipment is required. This includes:

  1. Line length segments according to Telecordia (Bellcore) SR-3004.
  2. Acoustic interface to telephone with artificial mouth equalizer.
  3. Differential to single ended amplifier.

For the talk-down and talk-off testing, 96 hours of standard speech material, in audio CD format, is available from Telecordia. The CAS2200 software has the ability to control SONY multi-disk CD changer, via an optional SONY CAV-2 product. This helps to automate the entire testing sequence, by starting and stopping the CD player via the CAS2200 scripting language.
